Route Overview

The Lemosho route is popular and one of the most scenic routes on Mount Kilimanjaro. This 9-day trekking gives time for acclimatization hence making the climbing more achievable. With the highest climbing success rate, the route is one of the least crowded and most accessible routes on Mount Kilimanjaro. Save the greatest memories as you make your way to Uhuru Peak, the highest peak on the roof of Africa. Lemosho Barafu route is one of the recommended routes to climb.

Day 1: Lemosho Gate to Forest Camp

Pick up and check out of a hotel in the morning, then drive to the Kilimanjaro National Park Lemosho Entrance Gate, the western gate of the park about (7,700ft/ 2,100m). The hiking begins at the gate to Forest Camp about (9,255ft/ 2,821 m) in the Rainforest Zone through lush rainforest. This trekking can take about 2 to 3 hours. During hiking, you may see some black and white Colobus Monkeys as well as some Blue Monkeys.

Dinner and overnight at Forest Camp.

Day 2: Forest Camp to Shira 1 Camp

We climb from Forest Camp to Shira 1 Camp (11,300ft/ 3,444 m) through the heather/ moorland Zone consisting of lush vegetation. In a few minutes we will break for lunch before proceeding with a journey. The trekking can take about 5 to 7 hours.

Day 3: Shira 1 Camp to Moir Camp

We climb from Shira 1 Camp to Moir Camp (13,779ft/ 4,200 m) through the Heather and Moorland Zone. In this zone, trekkers will travel through the desert-like landscape with small plants. The trekking can take about 5 to 7 hours including the lunch break.

Day 4: Moir Camp to Barranco Camp

We climb from Moir Camp to Lava Tower Camp (15,091ft or 4,600 m) in the Alpine Desert Zone for about 3 hours. We spend some time and break for lunch at Lava Tower Camp then later we will descend to Barranco Camp (13,066ft or 3,983 m). Enjoy a spectacular view of the Barranco wall.

Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

The hiking commences from Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp (13,255ft or 4,040 m). getting to Karanga Camp, we must cross the Barranco Wall. This portion of climbing is not technical as our professional guides will assist you. The trekking can take about 4 to 5 hours.

Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Our journey proceeds with a climb from Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (15,239ft or 4,644 m). The trekking can take about 4 to 5 hours to complete then we will rest for the remainder of the day.

Day 7: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak

Summit attempt hiking day begins at Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (19,341ft or 5,895m). The trekking can take about 7 hours to complete. Trekking from Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak has 2 options for climbers.

Option 1: We wake up at 6:00 AM and avoid trekking very early in the darkness, on the way near the summit we will break for lunch. After reaching the Uhuru peak spend some time on your accomplishment to reach the roof of Africa. Then you can take some photos to save in your memory. Later you will descend to Crater Camp (18,800ft or 5,730 m) for dinner and overnight.

The benefit of choosing Option 1 is that you will be reaching the summit in the mid-day when there are few climbers at the summit and also you will sleep at Crater Camp next to the Furtwangler Glacier, which is located next to Kibo’s Ash Pit (the heart of the volcano).

Option 2: We wake up at 11:00 PM night to prepare for our summit day. After breakfast, the trekking begins at around midnight, and after about 7 hours you will reach the peak around sunrise. After reaching the Uhuru peak spend some time on your accomplishment to reach the roof of Africa. Then you can take some photos to save in your memory. Later you will descend to Barafu Camp (15,239ft or 4,644 m) for about 3 to 4 hours for dinner and overnight.

Day 8: Descent to Mweka Camp

Option 1: Crater Camp to Mweka Camp (5,730m to 3,110m)

If you choose option 1 the descent begins from the Crater Camp to Mweka Camp approximately 6 to 8 hours.

Option 2: Barafu Camp to Mweka Camp (4,644m to 3,110m)

If you choose option 2 the descent begins from the Barafu Camp to Mweka Camp approximately 4 to 5 hours.

Day 9: Mweka Gate & Official Certificate

After breakfast, we continue descending to Mweka Gate (5,423ft or 1,653m). Then you can enjoy cold drinks while waiting for your Official Kilimanjaro Climbing Certificate for the great experience you had. Then you will meet your safari guide at Mweka gate to drive you back to your hotel in Arusha/Moshi.
