Elephant, giraffe, buffalo, zebra, and a variety of antelope inhabit the park as well as a variety of monkeys and a large population of hippos. If you are lucky, you may see the Manyara lions, well known for their tree climbing habits, lazily resting on the branches of an “Acacia tortilis” tree. According to science.com, “Lake Natron in Tanzania is one of the most serene lakes in Africa, but it’s also the source of some of the most phantasmagorical photographs ever captured — images that look as though living animals had instantly turned to stone. The alkaline water in Lake Natron has a pH as high as 10.5 and is so caustic it can burn the skin and eyes of animals that aren’t adapted to it”
You will have the opportunity to interact with the authentic tribe of Maasai around Lake Natron and get an insight into their lifestyle. Get enough time to search for bird flocks (especially flamingoes) at Lake Natron that is situated at the base of Africa’s only active volcano Oldonyo Lengai (Mountain of God).
Lake Natron boasts millions of crustaceans that in return attract thousands of flamingos making the place among the most important flamingo breeding grounds on earth.
After your hot lunch, continue with more activities such as hot springs and NgareSero waterfalls. Sometimes, Natron can get extremely hot around 40 degrees so the water at Ngare Sero River gorge can be cooling & refreshing.

Endoro Falls is located on the southern edge of the Ngorongoro forest. It is easily accessed from a newly-opened trail near Gibbs Farm in Karatu. The walk takes you through the forest, the elephant caves and Endoro Waterfalls. This is a 2–3-hour moderate hike and beauty of this trek lies in the fact that you get to be in a completely unspoilt forest.
You can come across Dik Dik (the world’s smallest antelope) and other forest creatures, including amazing bird life. Elephants can also be seen near the cave in search for its salt as this is evident from the cave-like structure that has been carved by elephants in search of this important nutrient.
The elephant caves were formed many years ago when elephants used to visit the rocks and hit them continuously to obtain calcium needed to improve their bone strength. The resulting big holes from elephant’s rock hits are what today’s world calls the “elephant caves”.
